Meet The Designer
Every space tells a story — and so does every designer. Before we shape yours, here's mine.
Story
Aloha, I am Juliann Chen, born and raised in Kāneʻohe on the windward side of Oʻahu. My identity is deeply shaped by my heritage as the daughter of Chinese and Vietnamese immigrants—survivors of the Vietnam War who brought to these islands an enduring resilience, a sharp ingenuity, and a quiet, steadfast determination to build a new life.
My father was a builder—a hands-on problem solver who understood how things came together. He noticed early on my fixation for coloring, painting, drawing, and gently suggested that I might become an architect. I was only eight years old and didn’t yet understand what that meant, but nonetheless, a seed was planted.
By the time I turned eighteen, I was running permits for my father’s construction company at the City and County of Honolulu Department of Planning and Permitting, in between college classes and a handful of internships. Through this experience, I gained firsthand exposure to the practical realities of building—how design, regulations, and construction intersect. And how achieving results often depend on the relationships we build, especially in Hawaiʻi. These early lessons continue to inform my approach to architecture today: thoughtful, grounded, and rooted in both creativity and constructability.
Experience
I earned a Doctorate degree in Architecture and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in Marketing from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
I’ve had the privilege of working at Hawaiʻi’s leading sustainability-driven architecture firm, contributing to the design of schools, healthcare clinics, and the renovation of commercial spaces.
Alongside this, I bring experience in residential design, creating thoughtful, attainable homes that meet the needs of Hawaiʻi residents. My residential work focuses on livable, functional spaces that balance aesthetics, sustainability, and affordability. I aim to design homes that feel connected to their environment, reflect the local culture, and respond to the unique challenges of the Hawaiʻi housing market.
Because marketing and architecture are naturally intertwined in my [design] thinking, I’m stay atuned into what users want and need. I strive to translate client goals and real-world experiences into thoughtful, functional, and context-driven design solutions.
My personal commitment to architecture is grounded by sustainable design, technical excellence, and projects that truly serve the client.
